1) The author means that the campaign for president is starting to come to a heated ending or the candidates are trying as hard as they can to win.

2)They disagree on building a border. Trump wants to build a border and deport all illegals, while Clinton is focusing more on public safety from suspected immigrants.

3)The government uses tax money by building new structures, and enforcing the law.

4)U.S. Air crafts have been bombing/launching attacks on ISIS bases in Syria, Additionally over 4,500 U.S. Soldiers are in Syria to support and train local forces against ISIS.

5)This one you will have to do yourself... My opinion is the one about ISIS, They're launching attacks on innocent people and killing thousands of families along the way, not to mention they're torturing people just to try and scare the U.S. and other countries.

Hope I helped...

Give three examples of how the racial codes of the 1940s make it impossible for Tom to win the trial
Nonamiya [84]

Tom's trial was particularly difficult for Atticus to win, as the racial codes of the 1940s made it very likely, from the beginning, for Tom to be blamed, even when there is a lack of evidence. These are some of the reasons why this is the case:

  • The social context of the South is one of prevailing racism. Although not all residents are racist, most people do internally believe that white people are generally better than black people. This means Tom's trial is difficult from the start.
  • There are sexual undertones in the book, as Tom is accused of ra.pe. This reflects the idea of African-American men as being overly sexual and interested in white women. This is reinforced by the fact that Mayella is not seen as a woman who might have desires of her own.
  • Finally, the fact that African-Americans in general were not wealthy means that Tom is not only black, but he is also a farm labourer, without much wealth and status. This places him in an even more vulnerable position.

Read this excerpt from Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal":
mamaluj [8]

c. to criticize his government's policy on Ireland

In the passage the narrator is literally talking about cooking and eating a child. He says that a child who has eaten well and is a year old would be a good food not matter how it was cooked. In the second paragraph, he says that eating the child would be no problem for landlords since they've already devoured the parents. The author may be talking about literally eating children, but in actuality he's criticizing his government's policy on Ireland.
