1:       2x+y=3
         5x-2y=12

2:      Multiply the first equation by 2
         (2) (2x+y=3) => 4x+2y=6

3:      Add
         4x+2y=6
    +   5x-2y=12
______________
         9x=18               The y's cancel out
         9x/9=18/9         The 9's cancel out
         x=2

4:     Plug (x=2) back into either equation but, I'm going to do the first one. It's  easier.
         2(2)+y=3
             4+y=3
          4-4+y=3-4         The 4's cancel out
                y=-1
Answer: (12,-1)
If you plug (x) and (y) back in it will equal 3 for the first and 12 for the second.

multiply 5 to 1st equation and subtract it from 2nd
multiply 5 to 1st equation to get 5c+5p=75 now subtract this from 2nd equation

thats 2p=16 so
p=8
now we find c from

The choir director set up chairs for the concert with an equal number of rows and columns.
Dima020 [189]
'y' is NOT the number of chairs in each row and column.  It's the TOTAL number of
chairs, so it's the product of (chairs in each row) times (chairs in each column).
The problem says that those numbers are equal.  So we would expect the TOTAL
to be a perfect square, and the number in each row and each column to be the
square root of the total.  Since the total is 81, the number in each row and column
could be either  +9  or  -9 .  Both answers are mathematically correct, but  -9
doesn't make sense in the real world.  So we know that  +9  is the real answer.
