Answer: ancestral ties with the judge of the trial.

Nathaniel Hawthorne is the author of The Scarlett Letter. This book deals with the Puritanism that dominated New England in the 17th century. The story takes place in Salem, a city made famous because of its legacy of witch trials.

Hawthorne was interested in Salem and the Salem witch trials because of his ties to the place. Born in Salem, his great-great-grandfather, William Hathorne, was involved in the trial of Anne Coleman and four others. Moreover, his great-grandfather, John Hathorne, was the magistrate presiding over the Salem witch trials of 1692-93.
