Equation 1)  5x + 3y = 16
Equation 2)  3x - 5y = -4

Multiply all of equation 1 by 3, and all of equation 2 by 5.

1)  3(5x+3y=16)

2)  5(3x-5y=-4)

Simplify.

1) 15x + 9y = 48

2) 15x - 25y = -20

Subtract equations from each other.

34y = 68

Divide both sides by 34.

y = 2

Plug in 2 for y in first equation.

5x + 3y = 16

5x + 3(2) = 16

Simplify.

5x + 6 = 16

Subtract 6 from both sides.

5x = 10

Divide both sides by 5.

x = 2

(2, 2)

At Martin Nature Center, the park ranger was showing Mrs. Rhames' class a comparison of a tree's age and the diameter of the tre
sdas [7]
If x is the age and y is the diameter of the trunk, write the equation:
ax+b=y

We must solve for a and b with the given information.

If (x, y) is (1, 4), we have:

a+b=4

If (x, y) is (10, 25), we have:

10a+b=25

Multiply the first equation by 10 to get:

10a+10b=40

Subtract the second equation from this to get:

9b=25

Thus b=25/9.  a=4-25/9=11/9, so our equation is 11x/9+25/9=y.

What is a number between 4.1 and 4.11? I got it wrong. I put 4.01...what did I do wrong???
Nesterboy [21]
So, 4.01 is less than 4.1. Think of it as 4.10 and 4.01, 1 is less than 10. One you could have put is 4.101, because it is more than 4.1 and less than 4.11
