The first amendment protects basic liberties such as freedom of religion speech, petition, assembly, and press. The interpretation of the first amendment is complex and different court cases had tried to define the limits of these freedoms. The definition of this freedom has evolved and this process is still continuing today. Freedom of speech is the most important liberty mentioned under the first amendment. It also conflicts with other rights and liberties and there are certain limitations to this such as the clear and present danger test is the limitation to this right. so slander is not covered under the first statement as it clearly violated the right to free speech.
