After the attacks on September 11, 2001, Americans supported laws that limited freedoms in order to ensure the safety of the US.

This is why the government created different laws like the Patriot Act. The Patriot Act gives the federal government to use wiretapping in order to gain information from people who are suspected terrorists. This gave the federal government the ability to listen in on peoples private conversations without having a judge sign off on it.

Many people felt this law was fine, since it was implemented as a means to stop another unexpected terrorist attack.
