Mr. West is painting his front sidewalk to make it colorful. The total area is 24 square feet. What are the possible dimensions
ryzh [129]

Answer:

All possible dimensions are: 1ft × 24ft = 24ft^{2}, 2ft × 12ft = 24ft^{2}, 3ft × 8ft = 24ft^{2}, 4ft × 6ft = 24ft^{2}, 6ft × 4ft = 24ft^{2}, 8ft × 3ft = 24ft^{2}, 12ft × 2ft = 24ft^{2}, or 24ft × 1ft = 24ft^{2}.

Step-by-step explanation:

With the assumption that the sidewalk has a rectangular shape:

              Area of a rectangle = length × width

From the question, the total area = 24 ft^{2}.

        ⇒                  length × width = 24 ft^{2}

So, all possible combinations are:

       i. 1 ft × 24 ft = 24 ft^{2}

       ii. 2 ft × 12 ft = 24 ft^{2}

       iii. 3 ft × 8 ft = 24 ft^{2}

       iv. 4ft × 6 ft = 24 ft^{2}

       v.  6ft × 4ft = 24 ft^{2}

       vi. 8ft × 3ft = 24 ft^{2}

       vii. 12ft × 2ft = 24 ft^{2}

       viii. 24ft × 1ft = 24 ft^{2}

The measure of first angle is 34 degrees and measure of second angle is 56 degrees

<em><u>Solution:</u></em>

Given that, the exterior sides of two adjacent angles make a right angle

Therefore, these adjacent angles forms 90 degrees

Let the second angle be "x"

The first angle has a measure that is six more than half the second

Therefore,

first angle = 6 + half of "x"

\text{ first angle } = 6 + \frac{x}{2}

Since these two angles forms 90 degrees,

first angle + second angle = 90

x + 6 + \frac{x}{2} = 90\\\\\frac{2x + 12 + x}{2} = 90\\\\2x + 12+x = 180\\\\3x + 12 = 180\\\\3x = 180 - 12\\\\3x = 168\\\\x = 56

<em><u>Therefore, first angle is:</u></em>

\rightarrow 6 + \frac{56}{2} = 6 + 28 = 34

Thus measure of first angle is 34 degrees and measure of second angle is 56 degrees
