Originally we have
length = x
width = x-2
since the width is 2 inches smaller than the length

now let's triple each dimension. Multiply the expressions by 3 to get
new length = 3*x
new width = 3*(x-2) = 3x-6

Now onto the area
area = (length)*(width)
area = (3x)*(3x-6)
area = 3x*3x-3x*6
area = 9x^2 - 18x

So the new larger rectangle has area of 9x^2-18x

A, B , and C are collinear points: B is between A and C. If AB = 36, BC = 5x - 9 , and AC = 54 , find x
balandron [24]

9514 1404 393

Answer:

  x = 5.4

Step-by-step explanation:

The segment sum theorem tells you ...

  AB +BC = AC

  36 +(5x -9) = 54

  5x = 27 . . . . . . . . . . . subtract 27 from both sides

  x = 5.4 . . . . . . . . . . divide by 5

Substitute x = 5 into the expression (-2)x + 6. Do you get -4? Substitute x = -1 into the expression (-2)x + 6. Do you get - 4 W
8090 [49]

Answer:The first method, by substituting  5 into the expression   (-2)x + 6 gives the coreect answer of   -4

Step-by-step explanation:

Ist method

Substituting  x = 5 into the expression   (-2)x + 6,  we have

 (-2) 5 + 6,

=-10 + 6

=-4

2nd method

Substitute x = -1 into the expression (-2)x + 6,we have

(-2)(-1) + 6

2  +6=10

The first method, by substituting  5 into the expression   (-2)x + 6 gives the coreect answer of   -4

2x+y=3, 5x-2y=12 how to solve this
Leviafan [203]
Start by getting one of the equations in terms of one variable, in this case lets put the first equation in terms of y

2x+y=3 ---> y=3-2x

now we plug that into the second equation

5x-2y=12 ---> 5x-2(3-2x)=12

we can then multiply and simplify

5x-2(3-2x)=12 ---> 5x-6+4x=12 ---> 9x-6=12 ---> 9x=18 ---> x=2

we can now plug x=2 into an equation to solve for y

2(2)+y=3 ---> 4+y=3 ---> y=-1
