I believe that the issue with discovering a perfect solution to a problem is that you cannot predict all of the consequences perfectly. You will surely get something wrong, even if it is the tiniest mistake, that will prevent you from finding the perfect solution.
I would agree that the main reason was that we wanted to protect a country from communism. I often wonder though if the Vietnam conflict was not more of a conflict between USSR and the United States than it was a conflict between North and South Vietnam.
