Answer:

Vertisols

If you lived in parts of Texas or California and your house foundation crumbled because the soil swelled when it was wet and cracked when it was dry, chances are that the soil would be a(n) vertisols.

Vertisol is a type of soil that it soil order is adapted to wet-dry cycles( found in dry area with low humidity)with little organic matter and there is a high content of expansive clayey  minerals characterized by the dominant presence of smectite clay in the soil. These soils form deep wide cracks from the surface downward when they are dry out (i.e, they shrink when dry) and swell when moistened.

Would the Erie Canal have had the same effect if the United States had not made the Louisiana Purchase in 1803?
iVinArrow [24]

Honestly, I think the United States would eventually look the same as it does now. If they had not bought the land, they likely would have gone to war for it. It is very unlikely that they would have let it stay there as part of France or an independent country, both because of Manifest Destiny and for national security.

The only answer related to the subject is "the results of their experiments".
After Scientific revolution scientists came up with theoretical conceptions and tried to prove them with experiments. There had to be both theoretical explanation and emirical proof. Before they were much more liberal when it comes to coming up with "scientific theorems", which explained results of their experiments.
