Answer:

because they wanted to make a better living. Others received letters from friends or family members who had moved west. These letters often told about a good life on the frontier. The biggest factor that pulled pioneers west was the opportunity to buy land.

What were the reasons for Westward expansion? Ever since the first pioneers settled in the United States at the East , the country has been expanding westward. When President Thomas Jefferson bought the Louisiana territory from the French government in 1803, it doubled the size of the existing United States. Jefferson believed that, for the republic to survive, westward expansion was necessary to create independent, virtuous citizens as owners of small farms. He wrote that those who “labor the earth” are God’s chosen people and greatly encouraged westward expansion. The pioneers who flocked to the West, all had their own set of reasons for taking on the long, treacherous journey to settle there.

Reasons for Moving West:
1. There was a vast amount of land that could be obtained cheaply
2. Great reports were continually sent back East about how fruitful and wonderful the West is, sparking a lot of interest.
3. The constraints of European civilization had a lot of people stuck in factory and other low-paid jobs. For the working class it was almost impossible to work themselves up in life, something that was very doable in the New World.
4. Mining opportunities, silver, and the gold rush was a big draw for many
5. The expanding railroad provided easier access to supplies, making life in the West easier.
6. Certain wheat strains were discovered and was capable of adapting to the climate of the plains
7. Being a “cowboy” and working on farms with cattle was romanticized
8. The lure of adventure

The Dust Bowl started in 1930 when severe drought started to hit the regions and in 1931 massive dust storms began to happen. By 1934 an estimated 35 million acres of formerly cultivated land had been rendered useless for farming, while another 125 million acres was rapidly losing its topsoil. The Dust killed many livestock and other animals that got in its way. The people living in the Dust Bowl areas were starting to escape the dust and go to California to start a new life. Some viewed them as intruders competing for land and wealth in California while other viewed them as refugees escaping a natural disaster that they had no control over. The survivors just wanted to live in peace and make a living in california. The survivors were refugees because they just wanted to survive and if they had the intention to make money and be wealthy they would have done that before the Dust Bowl occured.

Which of the following was an object of critique in the works of the "Lost Generation" of writers?
777dan777 [17]

The correct answer is the following: option c. Materialism was an object of critique in the works of the "Lost Generation" of writers. Gertrude Stein was an American novelist from the 1920's that coined the term "Lost Generation" using it as a reference to the lack of purpose that young people had at that time, as a consequence of the World War I. The term then became popular to represent the group of authors and poets of the 1920's as their work represented the feelings the World had at those times. One of the main themes The Lost Generation wrote about was about materialism, and how many people became reckless spenders, obsessed with material objects and throwing parties on a constant as all their moral ideals had been killed by the War. Famous authors from these movement are Ernest Hemingway and Scott Fitzgerald.
