They see education as the key to bridging the gap between their wasteful societies today and technologically enlightened future societies. Scientific management, as officially announced by Frederick Winslow Taylor, became the watchword for industrial efficiency and waste removal, with a stopwatch as its symbol.

Further explanation

The Progressive Era was a period of extensive social activism and political reform throughout the United States that stretched in the 1890s to 1920s. The main objective of the Progressive movement is to overcome the problems caused by industrialization, urbanization, immigration and political corruption. This movement mainly targets political machines and their bosses. By removing this corrupt representative in office, further means of direct democracy will be established. They also sought monopoly and corporate regulations through antitrust laws, which were seen as a way to promote equal competition for the benefit of legitimate competitors. They also advocate for new roles and government regulations, and new agents to carry out these roles, such as the FDA.

Many activists joined efforts to reform local government, public education, medicine, finance, insurance, industry, railroad, church, and many other fields. Progressive change, professionalize and make "scientific" social science, especially history, economics, and political science. In the academic field, amateur writer day gave way to research professors that were published in new journals and scientific journals. The leaders of the movement also exist far from presidential politics: Jane Addams, Grace Abbott, Edith Abbott and Sophonisba Breckinridge are among the most influential non-governmental Progressive Era reformers.

Wilson had a direct approach to problems while Roosevelt had an indirect approach, both of them had the same agenda regarding cartels but they had different ways of solving the problem.

Roosevelt defended natural resources putting them on federal protection and, safeguarded laborers rights.

Wilson focused mainly on the Triple Wall of Privilege, it meant that he would attack tariffs, banks, and trusts. Different from Roosevelt, Wilson didn’t distinguish good trusts from bad trusts, he was against any trust.
