Answer:

-7√5

Step-by-step explanation:

I'll transcribe your verbal question into a symbolic one as best I can:

-2√20 - √125

Note how √20 = √4*√5 and √125 = √25 *√5.  Thus,

your -2√20 - √125, after we've factored √5 out of both terms, becomes

-2(2)√5 - 5√5, or -2√5 - 5√5, which combines to form

-7√5 (answer)

-2\sqrt{20}-\sqrt{125}=-2\sqrt{4\cdot5}-\sqrt{25\cdot5}=-2\sqrt4\cdot\sqrt5-\sqrt{25}\cdot\sqrt5\\\\=-2(2)\sqrt5-5\sqrt5=-4\sqrt5-5\sqrt5=\boxed{-9\sqrt5}\\\\Used:\ \sqrt{ab}=\sqrt{a}\cdot\sqrt{b}\ for\ a\geq0\ and\ b\geq0

ycow [4]

Missing part of the question

Determine the number of handshakes, i, that will occur for each number of people, n, in a particular room. (people)

Answer:

S_n = \frac{n}{2}(n - 1)

Step-by-step explanation:

Given

For 5 people

\begin{array}{cc}{People} & {Handshakes} & {5} & {4} & {4} & {3} & {3} & {2} & {2} & {1} & {1} & {0} &{Total} & {10} \ \end{array}

Using the given instance of 5 people, the number of handshakes can be represented as:

(n - 1) + (n - 2) + (n - 3) + ........ + 3 + 2 + 1 + 0

The above sequence is an arithmetic sequence and the total number of handshakes is the sum of n terms of the sequence.

S_n = \frac{n}{2}{(T_1 + T_n})

Where

T_1 = n - 1 --- The first term

T_n = 0 --- The last term

So:

S_n = \frac{n}{2}(n - 1 + 0)

S_n = \frac{n}{2}(n - 1)

I am simplifying radicals and I've come across one that has me a bit confused.
zhenek [66]

The sqrt of (34 m^4) is  sqrt(34) times sqrt(m^4).

The sqrt of m^4 is easy ... that's just  m^2 .

The other part is more messy.  There's not much you can do with it.

                      sqrt(34) = sqrt(17) times sqrt(2).

That doesn't help make it any simpler.
You might as well just leave it as sqrt(34).

Then the final, simplified form of the original expression is

                          m^2 sqrt(34)
