Maupassant also uses irony, which is when what you expect to happen is the opposite of what actually happens, and this is the driving force behind the surprise ending. It's ironic that the necklace is fake because Mathilde and her husband went into such debt to replace it.

What are some differences between the homes on East Egg (a richer area) and those on West Egg?
padilas [110]
Homes on East Egg are wealthy from long lines of generations (a son will inherit his father's fortune), whilst homes on West Egg are people who built up their fortunes (ex. people who gain money from working in industries).

Read this text from Paragraph 3 of the passage.
vladimir2022 [97]

The correct answer is B.

In this passage from "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass" we can see that, by banning his wife from teaching him how to read, Mr. Auld gave Frederick what he had been looking for his whole life.

The manner in which he spoke, which was meant to impress his wife, caused a different reaction on Frederick. He knew that if his master was against him leargning how to read, it must be important. He understood that the only way he could ever gain his freedom was through education.
