Answer:

x = 3

Step-by-step explanation:

The standard form of a parabola (x^2 function) is:

y=ax^2+bx+c

If we algebraically manipulate this, we can have the vertex form:

y=a(x-h)^2 + k

Where

x = h will be the axis of symmetry

k will be the vertical shift

(h,k) would be the vertex

Now, the function given in this problem is given in vertex form:

y=(x-3)^2 + 4

From the original vertex form, we can say that this equation has the folllowing variable values:

a = 1

(3,4) is the vertex

x = 3 is the axis of symmetry

4 is the vertical shift

We are concerned with axis of symmetry. Thus, we can see that

x = 3 is the axis of symmetry

Answer:

x = 3

Step-by-step explanation:

Every quadratic is symmetrical about the line: x = h, where h is the x-coordinate of the vertex

The length of the base of an isosceles triangle is x. The length of a leg is 4x-6. The perimeter of the triangle is 60. Find x.
lbvjy [14]

Answer:

Perimeter of a triangle = add all sides

Both the legs of the isosceles triangle are always EQUAL.

x+4x-6+4x-6 = 60

9x-12 = 60

9x = 60+12

9x = 72

x = 8

Two towns, Ancaster and Dundas, are 4 km and 6 km, respectively, from an old railroad line that has been made into a bike trail.
serg [7]
Okay, so first you draw a picture and let x be the distance from point D to the rest stop. Then the distance from point  to the rest stop is  8 - x

You know that the length of the new trail is y + z, where y is the distance from Ancaster to the rest stop and z is the distance from Dundas to the rest stop.

Now by the Pythagorean theorem,  y^2 = 4^2 + x^2 and  z^2 = 6^2 + (8 - x) ^2

So take square roots of these, add them, and minimize.

Note: I am assuming the path is perfectly straight, otherwise this approach fails.
