Explanation: Council of Trent (1545-1563) initiated Counter-Reformation, i.e. Catholic Church (papacy) strategy against Protestantism and its expansion.  One specific feature of Counter-Reformation was an expansion of Catholicism outside Europe. Again papacy became engaged polically (church was engaged politically already in the Middle Ages). Council of Trent was 19th ecumenical council of the Catholic church. It was presided by three popes:  Paul III, Julius III, Pius IV.
