This is a lesson in order of operations...

PEMDAS- parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction... That is the order in which you have to proceed during any math problem..

Your question gives an excellent example of why.

8x3+4=
in this question, we would do multiplication then addition for the answer...

24 + 4 = 28

Now the other one

8 x (3+4)  =
in this expression, we would do what is inside the parentheses first, the addition.  Then we would multiply...

8x 7 = 56

You see we have the same numbers and we are performing the same operations, but the difference is in the order that we perform them.  As you can see it does make a difference because we get a different result.

28 vs 56

Two angles in a triangle add up to 98 degrees . What is the size of the third angle ?
ira [324]
First you must know that the sum of the interior angles of a triangle are 180.  Once you know that, you just simply add 98+x=180 (you can use an variable as you see fit, doesn't need to be x). And then you simply solve for x by dividing 98 on both sides leaving you with 82.

 y = - 4x + - 8 is equation of slope-intercept form.

What is in slope-intercept form?

  • Given the slope of the line and the intercept it forms with the y-axis, one of the mathematical forms used to derive the equation of a straight line is called the slope intercept form.
  • Y = mx + b, where m is the slope of the straight line and b is the y-intercept, is the slope intercept form.

the equation of slope - intercept form

                               y = mx + c

( -1 , -4 ) is point shown in graph

            slope = -y/x

                     = - ( -4)/-1  = 4/-1 = -4

             - 4 = -4 * - 1 + c

            - 4 = 4 + c

            c = - 4 - 4 = - 8

put value of c in the equation of slope - intercept form

             y = - 4x + - 8
