The real name for the piano is pianoforte.

Explanation:

It was called that because fortepiano is Italian for "loud-soft", like pianoforte is "soft-loud" for the modern piano. Both are abbreviations of Cristofori's original name for his invention: gravicembalo col piano e forte, "harpsichord with soft and loud.
