This is simply quoting Erikson theory in his industry versus inferiority stage, and is the fourth stage of the eight stages outline by Erikson for psychosocial development that occurs in children that are between the ages of 6 to 11, and in this period, children learn to accept evaluation and become productive. They can also become discouraged and feel incompetent or inferior.
According to Erikson, "the psychological conflict of middle childhood, which is resolved positively when experiences lead children to develop a sense of competence at useful skills and tasks".
