Santiago's story revolves around his last fishing expedition after 84 days of unluckiness, went to the far seaside off the coast of the Gulf Stream. There he caught a marlin and was being dragged out far at sea by the large fish. In the end, the fish was almost wholly eaten by sharks and Santiago returned home with only the bones and the head of the marlin.
