All major Indian religions (ie. Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism) believe in reincarnation. Many historic cultures did too. Namely historic Greek figures such as Pythagoras, Socrates, and Plato.

I think Germany was the country the declared war
I believe back in the day this was, and still is, a form of "stumping." I may be wrong, but presidents such as Lincoln would go town to town no matter the size, stand on a tree stump, and give a speech to the people.
It caused a great depression which lead to starvation and other disasters.
