The Loyalists were the colonists who remained loyal to the British power. The Patriots, on the other hand, were the colonists who fought against the British monarchy throughout the American Revolution.

Although they were opposed, both sides agreed on the need for a strong local government. The dissent was that, while the Patriots wanted self-government (independence), the Loyalists only wanted more power at the local level but remaining loyal to the crown.
