Just as Gauguin became fascinated with primitive art in the previous generation, a taste for magical artifacts was developing among the young avant-garde. Introduced by Derain to African masks (18-9), Picasso felt the visual and psychological power in their simple, oversized geometrical forms. Although Derain could never successfully incorporate their influence into his art, Picasso would do so in a way no one else could ever have imagined.
