Under the leadership of Mohandas Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, India was able to gain its independence in August of 1947.  In the process, the nation of Pakistan was partitioned and given its own independence. At this time, Pakistan was split in two parts, east and west. The people of East Pakistan eventually rebelled against the oppressive nature of the government and formed their own nation in 1971, Bangladesh.
