Properties of minerals range from hardness to cleavage to color.

Quartz can be identified in that it has no cleavage, only fractures.
Calcite can be identified with a hardness of 3.
Topaz can be identified with a hardness of 8.
Fluorite can be identified as one of the only common minerals with 4 directions of perfect cleavage.
