The main source of energy in ponds is through the sun. The major producers are the green plants. The chlorophyll in the plants take the sunlight and covert the carbon dioxide and water into organic compounds such as oxygen. This process is also known as photosynthesis.
Therefore energy usually travels through organisms from one trophic level to next.
