This is in my own words:

Pret<span>érito means is a single event in past tense and its something that was completed. Example, Yo hice comida Mexicana.
Imperfecto means described repeated actions in past tense. Example, Yo hacia comida Mexicana.</span>

The preterite expresses an action in the past that is defined. An Imperfect preterite expresses an action in the past that is NOT defined.
