Brunei was governed by the Bruneian Empire, which reached it speak around the 15th century. It would later become a British protected state in 1888. This condition would continue until 1984 when it gained its independence from the United Kingdom.
Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand are all territories that, after being ruled by local kingdoms and having brief stints of being controlled by the British, became sovereign states.
