During the war, the US army invaded Mexican territory and even blockaded the port of Veracruz in the Caribbean. Troops disembarked there and marched toward Mexico City to finish the war that had started in 1846 over border issues with Texas. In September 1847, Gen. Winfield Scott and his men attacked the capital. When fight ceased there, there were no more operations.  The war ended on February 2, 1848, with the signing of the Treay of Guadalupe-Hidalgo. Mexico lost half of its territory and was paid $15 million - the same  amount paid to France for the Louisiana Territory.
