Reagan elevated William Rehnquist to the office of Chief Justice. Sandra Day O'Connor was appointed by Reagan as the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court. Reagan named Antonin Scalia to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit before elevating him to the Supreme Court.
