No mechanism for his theory

Explanation:

Many geologist did not accept Wegener's theory because there was no mechanism to explain his observations.

Alfred Wegener proposed the theory of continental drift from which he explained the land masses on earth were once joined together.

He used evidences of;

  • Similar fossils found in different places today.
  • Tropical plant fossils found in polar regions.
  • Similar mountains found on different continents today.

 His theory was rebuffed because there was no sound mechanism to explain for why the continents drifted.

The theory of seafloor spreading and plate tectonics later explained Wegener's claims.
