<em>Oral fixation</em> occurs in the oral stage of development and is characterized by obsessive mouth stimulation. The most commonly suggested trigger for this type of fixation is when a child has a<em> problem during the weaning stage;</em> either being weaned too early or too late. Later in life, such a child may develop an obsession with activities that involve the mouth such as <em>over-eating which leads up to being overweight, talking excessively, excessive drinking and in some cases a smoking addiction.</em>
