ANSWER

x=-1.2 or x=1.6

EXPLANATION

The given equation is:

5{x}^{2}  - 2x - 10 = 0 Group and combine the constant terms:

5{x}^{2}  - 2x  = 10

Divide through by 5

{x}^{2}  -  \frac{2}{5} x  = 2

Add the square of the coefficient of x to both sides:

{x}^{2}  -  \frac{2}{5} x   +  \frac{1}{25} = 2 +  \frac{1}{25}

The left hand side is now a perfect square

( {x -  \frac{1}{5} })^{2}  =  \frac{51}{25}

Take square root:

{x -  \frac{1}{5} }=\pm \sqrt{\frac{51}{25}}

{x  = \frac{1}{5} }\pm \frac{ \sqrt{51} }{5}

{x  = \frac{1}{5} } -  \frac{ \sqrt{51} }{5} \: or \:  \: {x  = \frac{1}{5} } + \frac{ \sqrt{51} }{5}

x=-1.2 or x=1.6

If x2 + y2 = 38 and x - y = 2, then what is x? If there are two possible answers, then enter the larger of the two.
Ket [755]
If x-y=2 then x=2+y

And if you insert that in the first equation

(2 + y) {}^{2}  + y {}^{2}  = 38
4 + 4y + y {}^{2}  +  {y}^{2}  = 38
2y {}^{2}  + 4y - 34 = 0
y =  - 1 +  \sqrt{17}
Or
y =  - 1 -  \sqrt{17}

The first one is bigger so the answer is

y =  - 1 -  \sqrt{17}
