Based on the court case of Tinker v. Des Moines the Supreme Court has said that students have the right to express their political opinions at school so long that it does not cause a disruption in the classroom in accordance with school policy.
A careful reading of the First Amendment reveals that it protects several basic liberties — freedom of religion, speech, press, petition, and assembly. In this case, the students are appealing because of there freedom of speech being limited by the school.
