Answer:

The Missouri Compromise was an effort to balance the power between slave and free states in Congress. The law admitted Maine into the union as a free state and admitted Missouri as a slave state. With the exception of Missouri, it prohibited slavery north of the 36°'30 latitude line. It has passed in 1820 but repealed by the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854.

After the gaining of land following the Mexican-American War, the Missouri Compromise was thrown out. After that was a series of compromises put into place which essentially was putting a band-aid on a bullet wound. Each pushed off the issues of slave v. free states until the election of 1860. <span />
