The Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. The term Manifest Destiny was first used by John O'Sullivan, a newspaper editor in 1845, to describe the prevailing American mindset that all lands from coast to coast are destined to belong to the United States. This mindset was reinforced by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in the early 1800s, which scouted out the American West and came into fruition with the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869.

Answer:

In the 1800s, the notion of Manifest Destiny encouraged Americans to think of the United States as the land between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans.

Explanation:

The notion of Manifest Destiny refers to the political and social movement that advocated imperialism in the United States in the second half of the 19th century.

The movement finds its origin in the Democratic Party but was later boarded by the Republican Party. They believed that fate had set the United States to grow into a great power that could compete with the European empires, controlling the North American continent in its both shores, from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The belief in the superiority of the Anglo-Saxon race led to a "civilization offensive" overseas and was an argument for American imperialism, which gained in influence in the late 19th century.

Manifest Destiny has contributed to the outbreak of the Mexican-American War, the Spanish-American war and the Indian Removal. Supporters, for example, thought that imperialism was lawful, because otherwise someone else would do it.
