Foreign languages are extremely important to students' education. After taking my first Spanish course, I saw a significant incr

ease in my English grade. As a student in Spanish, I learned how to form verbs and verb phrases in that language. Learning about verbs and verb phrases in a different language gave me a different perspective about the same parts of speech in English. This new knowledge made English class much easier, and I received good grades in both classes last year. Learning foreign languages helps students in many different subjects.
Ian wrote a argumentative speech to convince the school board to adopt more foreign language classes at his school. Do the examples from this part of Ian's speech support his position?

A) no, because they do not give a detailed explanation of the benefits
B) yes, because they explain specifically how the classes helped him
C) yes, because they state that Ian took a Spanish class
D) no, because they do not give specific information

Answer: B, yes because they explain specifically how the classes helped him.

Explanation:

The question is asking how and why is Ian’s speech is a good argument. So, to narrow down your options start with A and, explain why it is or is not a good argument. Below I have explained why it is or isn’t the right answer.

A) Ian did give a detailed explanation of why it helped. For instance, he listed how verbs and verb phrases help him understand English classes. Therefore the answer cannot be A.

B) Ian specifically explains why foreign languages helped him with English Class and why. Therefore the answer could be B.

C) Ian stating that he took a Spanish class is not a good enough reason to make more foreign languages available. It doesn’t give enough detail and, it doesn’t support his argument with “backbone”. Therefore the answer cannot be C.

D) As previously mentioned Ian does list details and specific information so, D cannot be the answer either.

identify the speaker and context/ meaning of the following quote, "i got old jane gallagher on the brain again"
Tomtit [17]

The speaker is Holden Caulfield, the narrator of the cult novel "The Catcher in the Rye", by recluse writer J.D. Salinger. Holden is a teenager who escapes a boarding school in order to spend a few days in New York, where he interacts with strangers and experiences new things.

Meaning and context: When Holden says he has Jane Gallagher on the brain again, he means he cannot stop thinking about her. Jane is a girl whom he deeply admires, but at the same time he never makes the first move. When he learns his roommate has a date with Jane, he is assaulted by jealousy. The complete quote goes like this:

"All of a sudden, on my way out to the lobby, I got old Jane Gallagher on the brain again. I got her on, and I couldn't get her off."
