In order to answer this question, we first have to understand what "reductio ad absurdum" is. Reductio ad absurdum is a type of argument that seeks to make a point by using absurdity. Basically, it is an absurd or ridiculous argument.

Now, let's look at the literary works given.

Doctor Faustus is a play that tells about a doctor who so desires knowledge that he sells his soul to the devil. He makes a pact with the devil and receives great knowledge. Of course, it is not surprising that at the end of the play, the devil comes to take his due.

An Essay Concerning Human Understanding is an essay that seeks to explain the origins of human knowledge. It is a philosophical work rooted in rationalism, and it does not use absurdity at all.

The R a p e of the Lock is a long narrative poem that tells the story of a woman whose hair was cut against her will, leading to a great battle. While this story is a little absurd (cutting a small piece of hair is not nice, but should not lead to war), it is not making the argument for or against anything.

A Modest Proposal is an essay which argues for a solution to poverty in Ireland. Poverty at the time was widespread and many were starving. The author had a unique solution: eating children! The author outlined many advantages to his idea. Of course he wasn't being serious -- he didn't really want anyone to sell their children and he certainly didn't want to eat them -- but by making such a ridiculous argument he was shining light on the problem and other solutions that are much more reasonable. As a result, A Modest Proposal is an example of reductio ad absurdum because it uses absurdity to make an argument.

Answer:

A Modest Proposal.

Explanation:

<em>"Reductio ad absurdum" </em>is a form of argument that aims to prove for or against the point leading to an absurd, ridiculous or even impossible conclusion. This use of the absurdity in the argument is the main focal point of the whole issue.

"Doctor Faustus" written by Christopher Marlowe is about a scientist who acquired the practice of necromancy to gain all the knowledge of the universe. There is no use of absurdity in this story.

"An Essay Concerning Human Understanding" by John Locke is a philosophical  work concerning human knowledge and understanding. Though this essay has an argument, it contains no absurdity in it.

"The Ra pe of the Lock" by Alexander Pope contains absurd elements in its dealing of the unlawful "ra pe" of a lock of hair. This loss of hair even led to a battle, but does not have any argument for or against any point.

"A Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift is an essay about his "proposal' of dealing with the extreme poverty of the Irish society. By suggesting that the children be sold as meat which will provide a continuous flow of income for the parents and also provide a source of meat for the rich, Swift gave a really absurd argument for the solution.

Thus, "A modest Proposal" is an example of a reductio ad absurdum.

Which statement correctly describes the characterization in this excerpt?
ladessa [460]

The statement that describes the characterization correctly is narrator's description characterizes Robin Hood as generous (option D).

<h3>What is characterization?</h3>

Characterization is a term to refer to the action of determining the particular attributes of someone or something to distinguish it from others. You may refer to:

  • Characters
  • Fonts
  • Web pages
  • Companies
  • Products

According to the above, it can be inferred that the sentence that describes the characterization correctly is option D because the author delves into the characteristics of Robin Hood so that he can be distinguished as generous.

Note: This question is incomplete because the fragment is missing. Here is the fragment:

IN MERRY ENGLAND in the time of old, when good King Henry the Second ruled the land, there lived within the green glades of Sherwood Forest, near Nottingham Town, a famous outlaw whose name was Robin Hood. No archer ever lived that could speed a gray goose shaft with such skill and cunning as his, nor were there ever such yeomen as the sevenscore merry men that roamed with him through the greenwood shades. Right merrily they dwelled within the depths of Sherwood Forest, suffering neither care nor want, but passing the time in merry games of archery or bouts of cudgel play, living upon the King's venison, washed down with draughts of ale of October brewing. Not only Robin himself but all the band were outlaws and dwelled apart from other men, yet they were beloved by the country people round about, for no one ever came to jolly Robin for help in time of need and went away again with an empty fist. And now I will tell how it came about that Robin Hood fell afoul of the law. When Robin was a youth of eighteen, stout of sinew and bold of heart, the Sheriff of Nottingham proclaimed a shooting match and offered a prize of a butt of ale to whosoever should shoot the best shaft in Nottinghamshire. "Now," quoth Robin, "will I go too, for fain would I draw a string for the bright eyes of my lass and a butt of good October brewing." So up he got and took his good stout yew bow and a score or more of broad clothyard arrows, and started off from Locksley Town through Sherwood Forest to Nottingham.

Planning a writing project involves determining
Zarrin [17]

The correct answer would be the second option, B. Planning a writing project involves determining main points, supporting ideas, and the order of your ideas.

EXPLANATION:

Planning is an important part of a writing project. During the process of planning a writing project, you have to determine the main points of your writing, the supporting ideas of your writing, and the order of your ideas. Before everything, you have to decide what is the idea, the main points, and the supporting ideas of your writing. After that, you have to decide what is the purpose of your writing, the medium on how you will publish your writing, and who is the audience. Once you have decided all of this, you can start to write.

Here are the phases of writing:

1.    Prewriting

In the prewriting stage, you, as a writer have to decide the topic or the main idea of your writing. You must have a strong reason why you choose such a specific topic or main idea for your writing. After that, you have to conduct research and organize all of the information you need to start writing.

2.    Drafting

In the drafting stage, you can start to write. Yet, you don’t have to write the full idea of your writing directly. You can start with the outline first, including writing the main point or idea and the supporting sentence, choosing the suitable title and the subtitle. After you finish the outline, you can start to write and make it into a full paper or writing.

3.    Revising

In the revising stage, you have to check your draft of writing. Check the flow, check the grammar check the sentence, and the whole writing to make sure that it is good enough to be called as ‘proper’ writing. You might also have to polish or rewrite the writing.

4.    Editing

In the editing stage, you proofread the surface errors of your writing, for example, the spelling, grammar, formatting, and capitalization. Once you finish this stage, your writing is done.
