From the question, according to expectancy violations model the other person responded to Amanda’s behavior by compensating for Amanda's behavior.

This theory is adapted from non-verbal expectation model designed by judee. k. Burgoon which has to do with violation of personal space created by individual for themselves.

In people, the sudden behavioral change while communicating is what is clearly explained in expectancy violation theory. Judee. K. Burgoon, a professor of communication, family studies and human development proposed the theory and made emphasizes on the effect of non-verbal communication and the influences it has on people’s behavior.

Some people usually expect or predict that some individuals will act in a certain way in a discussion and that is breached sometimes due to communicators’ relationship, conditions they are in and mental state.

In other words, expectancy violation theory deals with individual perception of the interaction in a given situation. When people communicate, there will always be an expectation to how the other reacts. When there is violation to this expectation, it can have either a positive or negative perception depending on the situation and the people that are involved.

However, the way some individual acts is based on the cultural value they grow up with and this greatly affect people’s reaction.  LEARN MORE:
