One way in which Mercutio is a foil to Romeo is that Mercutio has a sense of humor. I choose this option because the main trait of Mercutio that reader can come across when reading the story is that this character  always makes a lot of jokes and puns about love which is completely opposite to Romeo that treats love too serious.
