The arrows represent the addition or subtraction of the numbers that are combined with Z. A number added to Z moves the point to the right. A negative number added (or a positive number subtracted) moves the point to the left. The length of the arrow is the amount added. The arrows marked with "Z" are length 4, because Z is 4.
