Because the Europeans didn’t have the brain power to successfully do things on their own. They would steal from other countries and take their ideas. While other places were prospering they were lost.

They believed that their system was the best that had ever been invented and that it should be spread throughout the world without delay. (This is one of the reasons they supported foreign missionaries and "filibustering" expeditions.)
