Studying cause effect relationship between two variables :
Independent Variable : It is the variable causing change in the dependent variable
Dependent Variable : It is the variable being effected by change in independent variable.
Eg : Law of Demand - Price negatively effects quantity demanded , price is the independent variable effecting demand & quantity is the dependent variable being effected by price.
"Is the quality of life of nursing home residents affected by their functional ability or hearing acuity?" : Quality of life is being effected by hearing acuity, so it is the dependent (outcome) variable. Hearing acuity effects quality of life, so it is independent (causal) variable.
Having a bmi of 35 is considered as a fat person. The answer to this question is letter b - Dominique has an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes. Dominique should try to lose weight and lower his BMI to imrpove his health.
