Gustav Mahler would be my answer. Strauss was also composing during the late 19th and early 20th but Mahler created more of a fusion between the two.
As it is very different to what most play writers (not sure if correct word) would write about. it showed and developed ideas that people weren't use to seeing on stage making it very different.
