As the glaciers in North America melted, the runoff formed a large lake in what is now southern Manitoba, eastern North Dakota,

and western Minnesota. Called Lake Agassiz, it was larger than all of the current Great Lakes combined. The present Lake Winnipeg is a remnant of this ancient lake.
