Answer 1) the reason is because extremist are people that go above and beyond what they believe. they will do what ever is necessary to become what their beliefs are. even of it means hurting others in the process.
2) it has been used to control other people to do what they want to do. They order people to do what they believe not what God wants them to do. they have turned the people into haters towards anyone that is not believing what they believe.
