A supply plane needs to drop a package of food to scientists working on a glacier in Greenland. The plane flies 110 m above the

glacier at a speed of 160 m/s. How far short of the target should it drop the package?

Answer:

The package should be dropped at a distance of 758.4 m from the scientist.

Explanation:

As shown in the given figure, let us assume that when the plane is just above the point 'O' it drops the package and 'A' be the position of the scientist, where OA = x.

Given, the velocity of the plane (the x-component) V_{x} = 160m s^{-1}, at point 'O' V_{y} = 0, the vertical height of the plane at 'O' is y = 110~m.

If 't' be the time required for dropping the package to the scientist at point 'A', and 'g' be the acceleration due to gravity then we can write,

&& -110 = v_{y}t - \dfrac{1}{2}gt^{2}\\&or,& -100 = - \dfrac{1}{2} \times 9.8 t^{2}\\&or,& t = \sqrt{\dfrac{2 \times 110~m}{9.8~m~s^{-2}}} \approx 4.74~s

If 'x' be the distance from the scientist where the package from the plane should be dropped then

x = V_{x} \times t = 160~m~s^{-1} \times 4.74~s = 758.4~m

Lauryn serves a volleyball with a mass of 2.1 kg. The ball leaves her hand with a speed of 30 m/s.

Hi! Let's see.

<h3><u>TOPIC: Kinetic Energy.</u></h3>

Explanation:

Data:

  • Mass(m) = 2.1 kilograms
  • Speed(v) = 30 m/s
  • Kinetic Energy(Ek) = ?

==================================================================

Use the kinetic energy formula:

  • \boxed{\boxed{\bold{E_{k}=\frac{m*(v)^{2}}{2}}}}

Replace by the data:

  • \boxed{E_{k}=\frac{2.1kg*(30\frac{m}{s})^{2}}{2}}}}}

We multiply speed squared:

  • \boxed{E_{k}=\frac{2.1kg*900\frac{m}{s}}{2}}}

Multiply in the numerator, without forgetting the units:

  • \boxed{E_{k}=\frac{1890J}{2}}}}

Both numerator and denominador operations are divided:

  • \boxed{\bold{E_{k}=945\ J}}

Answer: The kinetic energy is <u>945 Joules.</u>
