Halophiles are extremophiles that thrive in environments with very high concentrations of salt. <span>Halophiles prevent this loss of water by increasing the internal osmolarity of the cell by accumulating </span>osmoprotectants<span> or by the selective uptake of potassium ions. Answer:

Archaea that live in extremely salty water are called as halophiles. Normal organisms would shrivel in high salt condition because water would be pulled out of them. Halophiles have developed several mechanism to avoid this problem.

  • The first route is by increasing their osmolarity. They accumulate organic compounds called as osmoprotectants in the cytoplasm from the environment or by synthesis. As a result osmolarity increases inside the cell and water does not move out of the cell.
  • Another way is to make potassium ions selectively move inside the cell. The osmolarity is again increased by the influx of ions and hence the organism does not desiccate.

Answer:

If you have been to Venice (Italy), you have seen lagoons. In fact, the world lagoon is derived from a latin word <em><u>laguna</u></em>.

Principally, a lagoon is shallow water body which has been separated from the main water body due to sandbars, barrier islands, coral reefs,etc. However, sometimes, they includes other terms too such as bays, estuaries, sounds, or even lakes. They are of two types, i.e. Coastal Lagoons and Atoll Lagoons. In the figure attached, you can see how a lagoon looks like.

How was HMS Beagle's voyage significant to science?

It was the trip that Charles Darwin went on in attempt to find the answer of how animals got on earth in the first place and how they changed over time. This later on helped him discover evolution and natural selection. The most significant find on this voyage was that he found that different types of finches evolved to the food around them. Smaller beaks meant the finch ate more small nutrients but larger beaks meant the finch ate more harder prey such as fish and worms.
