In the first excerpt the grandfather is outside looking to see what the weather will be like for the day. In the second excerpt Heidi is also outside enjoying the environment. The two of them both feed off their environment. There is nothing in the passage to indicate that they are afraid of losing one another. While Heidi is giddy and excited in excerpt 2, there is not thing that shows her grandfather is giddy and excited. We don't have enough information to determine whether or not they are short on words.
