The reaction of Grignard Reagent is used to introduce deuterium in a particular position for molecules.

Normally, the introduced Deuterium just takes the position of the -MgBr substituent on the Grignard's reagent. The -MgBr then takes on the remaining -OD substituent as if it were a -OH substituent.

So, the summary of the reaction is

R-MgBr + D₂O ----> R-D + MgBr(OD)

And for the alkyl lithiate too, the Deutrium just substitutes the -Li and the -Li takes on the -OD, just like in the reaction with Grignard's reagent.
